As a dog trainer here are 3 things I teach puppies and kids in order to maintain a safe environment.

1. Setup a safe zone. A playpen is a good visual for kids to learn that when the puppy is in the playpen they’re off limits. Providing the puppy frequent breaks I prevent my puppy from becoming overstimulated and it builds trust in me as the leader in the home.

2. Encourage food safety. Involve kids in bonding with the puppy by having them scatter kibble for the puppy to find. Or adding kibble to their bowl. Teach our children that taking anything from the puppy’s mouth or stealing their food is off limits. By doing so we prevent resource guarding.

3. Respectful handling. As I teach our puppy to not use their mouth on us, and gently take food or toys. I also teach kids gentle touch by first practicing with a stuffed dog first.

What else would you add?
